Before you think that I’m a big loser for going to a New Kids concert, let’s get some background. It all started in second grade when Karla and I ended up in the same class and became best friends. We have so many fun memories (pulling each other’s teeth out with string and a door, sleep overs, a fight that landed us in the principals office) but in 4th grade we ended up in different classes and she decided my chin was too big so we kind of stopped being friends (we joke about that now, but the truth is I DO have a big, pointy chin). Anyway … fast forward to sixth grade – we are friends again and I have a “boyfriend” who is popular (I am not) and he tells Lucy about me (she’s popular, very much into sports and I’m a little scared of her) she invites me to her birthday party and our friendship begins … one of our shared interests? NKOTB baby! The three of us spend almost every afternoon together watching their videos, learning their dance moves and buying a gazillion teeny bopper magazines featuring the New Kids. I am not kidding you we spend SO MUCH money on them. Bottom line, we loved them but we never went to a concert together.
Fast forward over a decade … we’re all married, have kids, live in different countries/states but still e-mail or talk on the phone regularly. As soon as we found out the New Kids were reuniting we knew we had to go to the concert together – there is no one else I would want to go with. We booked our flights and bought our tickets as soon as dates were announced way back in the spring – a girl’s weekend was planned!
The concert was a blast! We all ended up hoarse from so much screaming and singing. It was definitely worth the wait – such fun memories that we got to relive. The arena was packed with thousands of women just like us – married, with kids, a bunch of thirty something year olds just wanting to have a fun time and reminisce. One of the funniest things was when someone threw their bra up on stage, Jordan picked it up and swung it around – however it was not a sexy, lacy bra that you would expect to be thrown at a concert, but a full-coverage, beige bra – we’re all mom’s now, what do you expect? At least it wasn’t a nursing bra! : )
So, if you were a New Kids fan years ago and haven’t been to their concert I do recommend it. If you live in the southeast, they will be in Charlotte and Atlanta next week (yes, I checked hoping Michael would want to take me – he said no) so you still have a chance to go and experience some of this …
Note to the girl sitting next to me at the concert – I accidentally lost your e-mail address and will not be sending you the pictures as promised. I’m sorry and do feel terrible about it but have no way of contacting you since I don’t know you at all. I know you don’t read my blog, but just being able to say sorry makes me feel better. I hope your pictures turned out ok.

How fun! Love them!! So great to see your friends. I haven’t seen them since your wedding. What a special trip. If I had a scanner I would send you a pic of me, you, Brooke and Jennie dressed up as the NKOTB for the talent show. Hey, we won 2nd place. I think that’s pretty good!
That is AWESOME!!!
PLEASE find a way to post the video you made for NKOTB!! I know your readers would thoroughly enjoy it!!
Thanks for bringing up that video! However, I am not sure where it is right now, probably in storage somewhere.
P.S. You look SO pretty in that picture!!
That’s awesome! I almost cried when I heard they were getting back together and spent an evening, driving Lew crazy, on the computer playing all of my old favorite songs! I’m so jealous that you went!!
Ok i have been a silent stalker..err follower on here for a while now. I think i only met you once or twice but i volunteered with Michael way back when we first moved into the new building in Anderson. Anyway this was enough to drag me out of hiding. I have a VERY simular story i wont bore everyone with. Only difference is my friend is in Tx and I in SC when we both lived in TX at 14 we went to a concert together in Dallas. We were so far up in the balcony …we arent even sure it WAS NKOTB lol .. anyway there was no way i could afford to take the trip this yr and she couldnt schedule it when they were coming here .. mommy life got in the way i suppose you could say. Im still a little bummed .. my Bday is halloween and they will be in ATL just a few days before.. i tried to get everyone i knew to go in and buy me and my 13 yr old tickets since she loves them now. (fine with me as long as she doesnt pick Donnie as her crush ..and she didnt)..but nobody fell for my pouty face. So thank you for letting me live vicariously through your blog!!
Sounds like a blast! I also liked BOYZ TO MEN back then! Actually, I still do. They are coming to the Peace Center in Greenville in March.
Lucia and Karla are so wonderful. They are sooooooooooo nice! When you make friends, you alway pick winners! I have so many fond memories of the three of you. I had so much fun being your mother and having your friends come over! I didn’t know the story of how you met Lucía!
I am glad you take time for yourself to relax and have fun! That is so important!
Oh MY! NKOTB was my very first concert. Good memories. I love the pictures. Although my taste has changed from way back when… I am a more of a well more of a Marky, Mark Kind of girl now. I know he is not on NKOTB but Joey is just not my taste anymore. Love the post. h
Ok I totally just watched that video and sang the whole thing so loud. Seanna is just looking at me funny. LOVE IT! H
Oh how I would love to be able to go to one of their reunion concerts! My husband just laughs at me but since I wasn’t allowed to go as a kid, I would do just about anything to go now!! Good for you!!
OH that is hilarious! GREAT! I am sending this to my NKOTB-BFF right now. She and I once did two concerts in one week because we landed great seats for both shows! Thank you for this blast from the past.
My teenager just said, “Whoever choreographed that choreographed it for a few teenage boys, apparently.”
I told her it was chor. for them when they WERE teenage boys and she said, “OH, so it was some of their original moves?”
Why is that so funny to me? Maybe because they’re still doing the moves we did in our backyard with the boom box blaring?
I’m going to the NKOTB concert in Atlanta this week. I can’t wait. I’ve never been to one of their concerts, and when they visited the Today Show in May, not only did I record it, but I saved it on my DVR for almost two months. Thanks for posting how much fun you had… I can’t wait!!!!!
My wife would be right there with you if we could afford this. I cannot criticize her though as I have always been a fan of Deborah “Debbie” Gibson and have met her enough times over the years that she would recognize me and remember my name when told.
However, last week we saw an episode of Rachel Ray where she had NKOTB as her guests and several lifelong fans on her show. One of them carried an empty water bottle she claimed had been drunk from by one of the guys and she was in tears as she related how the TSA made her poor out the water before passing through security at the airport. The NKOTB member whose bottle it was originally supposed to have been gave her a new bottle after he drank from it. Too funny.
thats awesome!

they were my first concert!
LOVE IT!
I saw them, too, and blogged about it: http://redcedar.wordpress.com/2008/10/10/i-was-13-all-over-again/
I witnessed the SAME bra story and have heard several others testify it; I’m convinced the Kids bring one with them every night. It’s a plant! I know it!
But wasn’t the show so awesome? All my feelings for Jordan came flooding back, and I also went home with half a voice!
